- UK retailer Carphone Warehouse has released (and then retrieved) promotional pages for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.
- The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro main camera is 50MP and lets in 150% more light; the 48MP telephoto sensor on the Pro does a 4X / 20X Super Res Zoom optical zoom.
- Two new camera features include Magic Eraser and Face Unblur.
- Expect 5 years of Android security updates on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.
Rather than hiding the Pixel 6 in secret, Google has taken a somewhat different approach with its upcoming return to flagship smartphones. The company already showcased the design and a number of key features in a Twitter thread in August, with a promise to reveal more this fall.
The date of the reveal has since been confirmed to be October 19, but it looks like there may not be too many surprises left as a UK retailer accidentally uploaded its Pixel 6 promo page in advance, confirming the rumors and revealing a number of others in the process.
The retailer in question is Carphone Warehouse, which, as you can probably guess from its dated name, has been in the cellphone game since 1989. The page was hastily removed, but not before prolific leaker Evan Blass cannot screenshot all to share with its 448,000 Twitter followers. Or, if you’d rather not deal with Twitter’s excessive image compression, Web Archive saved the Pixel 6 page here and the Pixel 6 Pro page here.
The most interesting revelations come from the camera department, with the list revealing a 50 MP main sensor on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. That’s up from the 12MP module used on the latest Pixel handsets; and that will apparently leave “150% more light” than the Pixel 5.
This will be accompanied by a 12 MP ultra-wide sensor and, on the Pixel 6 Pro, an additional 48 MP telephoto lens for long-distance shots. This will apparently include a 4x optical zoom and, with Super Res Zoom, a zoom up to 20x (although a footnote adds that it is “not available for all applications or all modes of the system. ‘camera”).
The page also lists a bunch of camera tips Google has up its sleeve, including something called “Magic Eraser” for removing unwanted photo bombers from shots and “Face Unblur” for blurring portraits. sharper. The Pixel 6 Pro page also mentions a 94-degree field-of-view front camera to make sure “everyone is in the picture.”
Another difference between the regular model and the Pro model is the screen refresh rate. While the Pixel 6 Pro page specifically mentions a 120Hz panel with LTPO technology that can drop down to 10Hz to save battery life, the regular Pixel 6 simply highlights a “smooth screen” with a “high refresh rate,” so we assume it means 90Hz.
The battery life is highlighted as a plus, which will be a relief for those who suffered from the Pixel 4’s limited endurance. Both pages mention “all day battery life”, but the Pro list goes further by saying that the battery “allocates power to the apps you use the most to last beyond 24 hours, even in 5G.”
Speaking of charging, the new and improved Pixel Stand also gets a shout out on both pages, with the site claiming it’s “twice as powerful” as the first-gen model, with wireless charging rates of up to. 21 W for the Pixel 6 and 23 W for the Pixel 6 Pro.
The final detail worth noting is Google’s commitment to provide both Pixel 6 phones with five-year security updates from the day they go on sale. That’s an impressive warranty and beats the four years Samsung is offering on its handsets.
This all adds up to a pair of phones that are looking really very promising, and we can’t wait to put them to the test when our review units arrive after the big reveal on October 19.
