Will Apple’s Folding iPhone Use Electronic Paper Technology for Sub-Display?
Minchey Kuo is known for leaking high-precision Apple products. This time, Kuo leaked about a new technology being tested on a folding device that Apple is rumored to be developing.
Apple is testing E Ink’s Electronic Paper Display (EPD) for future foldable device’s cover screen & tablet-like applications. The color EPD has the potential to become a mainstream solution for foldable devices’ must-have cover/second screen thanks to its excellent power-saving.

Apple is testing E Ink’s Electronic Paper Display (EPD) for future foldable device cover screens and tablet applications. Color EPD has the potential to become the mainstream solution for covers / second screens, a must-have for foldable devices, due to its excellent power savings.
E Ink is an electronic paper technology, and unlike liquid crystal displays, it does not require a backlight. It is used in Amazon’s e-book reader “Kindle” in familiar places.
As Mr. Kuo points out, this E Ink display is characterized by excellent power saving. He points out that this has the potential to become mainstream in the second display of folding smartphones. This display is generally black and white, but it seems to suggest a color one.
Kuo has previously claimed that Apple is developing a foldable device. In April of this year, he said Apple was “actively testing” devices with a 9-inch foldable OLED display.
Apple’s foldable product development is expected to initially focus on medium-sized devices, followed by devices with larger displays, and finally on smaller devices like the iPhone.
In February, display analyst Ross Youngs explained that Apple is considering a full-screen foldable laptop with a 20-inch display. Various other leaks make it more likely that Apple is developing a collapsible device.
However, according to Mr. Kuo, the device will appear in 2025 at the earliest. It is expected that other leaks will still be available.
