A macOS app called Aerial has been updated with new screensaver options, along with HDR, integration with Spotify and Apple Music, and more.
New screensavers from Apple have appeared in recent years, the latest being the “hello” logo that has appeared on the new design. 24-inch iMac (2021) models. But while AppleTV has had attractive screensavers that show a view of certain cities, they never made the jump to other Apple devices.
Thanks to Air, you can now get similar screen savers for your Mac. It offers plenty of customization options including the ability to create playlists and display certain overlays such as weather, battery status, timers, etc.
For version 3.0, the 16 screensavers of tvOS 15 can be used on your Mac, such as Yosemite National Park, Grand Canyon, Torres del Paine Chile, etc.
Analytics: a welcome addition to macOS 13
Setting up the antenna in System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver is an easy affair, where you can tailor them to your location, time of day, or a certain order.
There are also custom hover screensavers from Creative Jetson, all free to use, plus choose other screensavers from tvOS 10 and above.
By using them on the recently released version 14-inch MacBook Pro (2021) in HDR makes screensavers absolutely fantastic.
Seeing landscapes from places like Scotland, Florida, and more really showcases the quality of the new MacBook displays. Combine that with the customization options on offer, and you’ll wonder why Apple hasn’t officially brought these screensavers to macOS.
Screensavers have been a constant feature of computers since the very first one, created by John Socha in 1983, with an application called ScrnSave.
Chances are you’ve seen a screensaver full of pipes, or one where you walk around a house. But with advances in display technology, from CRT monitors to LCD monitors, their use has declined in recent years.
But with apps like Aerial and official features from Apple, screensavers have a chance to come back big. Not just for macOS, but also for Windows 11. Possibly remakes of the mid-90s house pipes and screensavers, plus methods to download more screensavers from the Microsoft Store .
But in the meantime, Aerial does a great job of showing how screensavers can thrive in 2022, and what Apple and Microsoft could do for future macOS and Windows updates.
