Potential spoilers follow for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1.
Soon it will be time to return to the Spider-Verse. And no, we’re not just talking about Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Three years after Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse wowed audiences with its wonderful comic book style, gripping story, and punchy soundtrack. and Unique turn on the popular superhero, it’s time for the next entry in Miles Morales’ animated film journey.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, the sequel to the original Sony Pictures film, is set to arrive in theaters on October 7, 2022. Well, Part 1 is, Part 2 doesn’t land until 2023. After that which feels like a long wait, however, Sony has finally given us our first glimpse of the upcoming sequel with a two-minute trailer at Comic-Con Brazil (CCXP) 2021. If you missed its unveiling on December 4th , you can consult it below:
There is a parcel to take in the first Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1 trailer. We see Miles and Spider-Gwen reunite, Miles grappling with Spider-Man 2099, a few teases on new Spidey worlds inspired by the comics, and more, all in its two-minute and 30-second battery life.
And that’s only the things we can see in real time. There are plenty of Easter eggs and hidden secrets in the first Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1 teaser, which we imagine you will have missed on your first or even tenth viewing.
So here are eight things you might have missed in the Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse Part 1 trailer:
1. What gadget is Spider-Gwen wearing?
One of the biggest “I wonder what this is” moments from the trailer is a gadget Spider-Gwen wears on her left wrist. You can see it as soon as she lands in Miles’ reality in the image above.
So what is it? It appears to be a time travel gadget that allows Gwen to walk through the Spider-Verse through the orange hex portals we see throughout the teaser.
Interestingly, Spider-Man 2099 aka Miguel O’Hara, who will again be voiced by Oscar Isaac after the actor’s brief turn as a character in the post-credits scene of Into the Spider-Verse, also appears via one of those portals later in the trailer. So is O’Hara the person behind this Spider-Verse time travel gadget? And did he give Gwen one, so she could go and ask Miles for help with a new multiversal threat?
In our opinion, all signs point to yes. Much like the other versions of Spider-Man, O’Hara is an intellectual genius. And, given that it resides in the year before the 22nd century, technology should have advanced at such a rate (at that point, anyway) that he could find a way to jump between universes to counter any threat to the multiverse. In fact, we also see him wearing a very similar device in the post-stinger scene of Into the Spider-Verse, so we’re pretty confident about that one.
2. The return of the hexagons
Speaking of the hexagonal tunnel portals we see in the trailer, they are another interesting callback to a few Marvel productions.
We saw similar hex-style jump points in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Captain Marvel, so it’s cool that there’s some continuity between those live-action movies and this animated sequel.
3. A good place to ride
Into the Spider-Verse was chock full of tongue-in-cheek callbacks to less-awesome aspects of Spider-Man’s illustrious comic book story.
One particularly maligned item – for comic book fans, anyway – is the Spider-Mobile, a buggy-style vehicle that has appeared fleetingly in various Spider-Man comics. Given that the wallcrawler has a much superior way to cross New York – i.e. swinging through town using his web shooters – it always seemed like a foolish decision to give Spider – Man a car to get around.
But we move away. The Spider-Mobile was one of the more obvious Easter Eggs included in Into the Spider-Verse – it makes an appearance alongside other Spidey vehicles in Aunt May’s underground tech lair.
He also appears in the Across the Spider-Verse Part 1 trailer, but, this time around, his appearance is more of a flashing moment and you’ll miss him. Proceed to minute 0:55, after Gwen grabs Miles’ sketchbook, and look at her library. You will spot a model of the Spider-Mobile on the third shelf at the bottom. Pretty neat, eh?
4. A ticket to ride
We have a fun little moment in the trailer when Gwen spots a drawing of her, by Miles, in her sketchbook. But, if you look on the other page of the book, you’ll see a bus ticket reminiscent of Into the Spider-Verse.
How? ‘Or’ What? Well the post has ‘Hudson Valley Explorer’ on it. This is a callback to the bus Miles and Peter B. Parker boarded on to the Kingpin Research Center. Considering this was Miles’ first real mission as Spider-Man, it’s obvious he would keep this item as a memento of his first superhero adventure.
5. Visit the Spider-Man 2099 universe
Another moment that you will probably have missed is as we will travel to Spider-Man 2099’s own universe in the film.
Right after O’Hara catches Miles during the teaser, we see a number flashing on her wrist gadget for a brief moment before the action jumps into a new world. The number displayed is “928”, which refers to the version of Earth that O’Hara is from.
In the comics, Earth-928 is a possible future version of Earth-616, which is the main universe of Marvel’s literary works. Here, a massive civil war breaks out between humans and mutants, which humans win.
It was after this war that O’Hara tried to replicate Spider-Man’s formula and, in short, ends up imbibing spider-like abilities including strength, speed, and stamina. superhuman, enhanced healing and vision, organic straps he pulls. from his forearms, claws retracting on his fingers and toes, and secreting paralyzing venom from the fangs.
So yes, we’ll be visiting O’Hara’s own universe at some point – we’ll even get a brief glimpse of it after he kicks Miles through another portal before the teaser ends.
6. Orange strap
Another interesting addition to this version of Spider-Man 2099 is the color of its strap.
In the comics, O’Hara has a clear / white strap, as do his fellow webheads. In the Across the Spider-Verse teaser, however, we see that its strap is orange. This will likely be part of a suit upgrade, i.e. if Spider-Man 2099’s strap is not organic and, instead, synthetic like other Spider-Men ‘s type – it helps her grab hold of people who may not be in her universe.
As we saw in Into the Spider-Verse, people start to run away if they were not born into the universe where they were accidentally transported. So maybe O’Hara’s girth allows him to lasso people, like Miles, and stabilize their genetic makeup in different universes. That is, until he can give Miles his own multiverse traversal gadget.
7. The arrival of new Spider-Men
Naturally, a Spider-Verse movie is going to reunite us with the Spider-People we’ve seen before, as well as potentially introducing us to new Spider-Men.
One of those individuals that we can see is Spider-Man India. After Miles walks through a multiverse tunnel, he arrives in a world that has been drawn and colored in a pencil aesthetic. It’s here that he’s caught by Spider-Man 2099 and, as the duo bounce off the environment and onto each other, we see distinct Hindi text flashing across the screen – much like the word “Thwip” and other texts we’ve seen in Into the Spider-Verse. There is only one Spider-Man character who speaks Hindi, and that’s Spider-Man India.
The ending of the trailer also teases other potential Spider-People. We see a number of logos flashing across the screen, which could hint at the arrival of Spider-Punk or Silk.
We know Jessica Drew’s Spider-Woman is already in the cast (she will be voiced by Issa Rae), while Japanese Spider-Man has also been teased by the film’s co-writer Phil Lord. But it would be cool to see even more Spider-People appear in Across the Spider-Verse Part 1 and Part 2.
8. Who is the bad guy?
Okay, the trailer doesn’t tease that per se. But, based on the fact that this is an extended, interdimensional story, we suspect it will be The Spot.
Wait, who? The Spot, real name Johnathan Ohm who in the comics is a scientist who works for Kingpin (where have we seen this before?). Tasked with trying to replicate the radiation levels of the vigilante known as Cloak, Ohm ends up creating a dark portal to an unknown realm, which he passes through and gains the abilities to teleport between dimensions and different realities.
If he moves between universes and causes chaos wherever he goes, The Spot could catch the eye of Spider-Man 2099, who wants to end his escapades. This would lead O’Hara to go recruit Spider-Gwen, Miles, and company, as their every realities would be threatened by The Spot’s blueprint. That’s why they have to travel between different worlds using O’Hara’s time travel gadgets and stop The Spot together.
