Sparks fly between Caped Crusader and Catwoman in the latest Batman trailer

Robert Pattinson plays the dual role of Gotham City’s vigilante detective and his alter ego, reclusive billionaire Bruce Wayne, in The batman.

Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson), aka Batman, faces off against a mocking serial killer and his family’s potential ties to long-standing corruption in Gotham City in the latest trailer for The batman. But he still has time for some very flirtatious punches with Selina Kyle / Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), which should delight “Bat / Cat” shippers everywhere. The studio helpfully titled the trailer “The Bat and the Cat”, lest anyone miss the intended target.

As I wrote previously, the initial plan was to place the film within the DCEU, after the events of Justice League. But while Warner Bros. was rethinking the shared universe model for his superhero films in favor of standalone films and franchises, Ben Affleck announced he was stepping down as director and the studio replaced him with Matt Reeves. Affleck would eventually pull out of the project altogether, following his divorce from Jennifer Garner and a stint in rehab for alcohol abuse.

Reeves said the plot will follow a series of murders, revealing the history of corruption in Gotham and how Bruce’s family is linked to that corruption. Classic villains – the Riddler, the Penguin, the Catwoman – are also in the early stages of their development into full-fledged villains. Reeves cited Alfred Hitchcock as a major influence on the overall appearance of his film, as good as Chinese district, The French connection, and Taxi driver.

In addition to Pattinson and Kravitz, the cast includes Jeffrey Wright (Westworld) as Commissioner Jim Gordon; Colin Farrell (fantastic beasts and where to find them) like Oswald Cobblepot / Penguin; Andy Serkis (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) as butler and mentor to Bruce Wayne, Alfred Pennyworth; Jean Turturro (Barton fink, The Great Lebowski) as head of crime Carmine Falcone; Paul Dano (Okja, 12 years old slave) as Edward Nashton / Riddler; and Peter Sarsgaard (Dopesick) as Gotham DA Gil Colson.

According to the official synopsis:

Two years roaming the streets as Batman, sowing fear in the hearts of criminals, has taken Bruce Wayne to the deepest shadow of Gotham City. “With only a few trusted allies – Alfred Pennyworth, Lieutenant James Gordon – among the city’s corrupt network of officials and prominent figures, the lone vigilante has established himself as the sole embodiment of vengeance among his fellow citizens. .

The first teaser aired during last year’s DC FanDome, and the Warner Bros. CinemaCon last August featured a brief sizzling reel of new footage. A full trailer released in October, in which we got a few more footage of Batman beating street henchmen, some serious sparks with Selina / Catwoman, a fiery showdown with Oswald Cobblepot, and our first brief glimpse of the Riddlers.

This latest trailer opens with some of the action sequences we’ve seen previously, interspersed with Pattinson in his button-up character of Bruce Wayne. He is approached by Bella Reál (Jayme Lawson), a candidate for mayor of Gotham City, who appears to be targeting him as a potential donor. “You know, you really could do more for this city,” she tells him, lengthening the journey of guilt, as we watch scenes from her nighttime crime-fighting adventures scroll. “Your family has a history of philanthropy, but as far as I know you don’t do anything.”

Bruce / Batman has other concerns, namely a killer who continues to leave him cryptic messages. It’s the Riddler, who wants Batman to “unmask the truth about this cesspool we call a city.” This includes the legacy of the Wayne family. Bruce also meets Selina Kyle, who seems to have a lot of cats (“I have a thing for stray dogs”). Soon Batman and Catwoman trade sexually charged punches and jokes. “The bat and the cat, he’s got a nice ring,” Catwoman said suddenly.

The batman hits theaters on March 4, 2022.
