What just happened? Custom workstation / server builder Puget Systems released a breakdown of failure rates found in hardware it sold throughout 2021. There are some interesting findings, which come with some caveats, But the most important thing to remember seems to be that if you want a reliable storage drive, Samsung SSDs are a good bet.
Puget Remarks As every part it uses in its systems goes through a full qualification process, the failure rates reported here are likely below the industry average. “This means that our relative failure rates between certain groups of hardware may not be what you would see if you were to build your own system, or even purchase a workstation from other computer manufacturers,” says he does.
Additionally, Puget does not include failures which it believes were caused accidentally by employees or customers, or anything related to shipping damage. In addition, it only includes groups of material for which it has statistically significant amounts of data.
Starting with the processors, 11th Gen Intel processors have by far the highest failure rates: 5.28% in store (when testing, before shipping) and 1.32% in the field ( at customers). However, Team Blue’s 10th gen processors had better combined failure rates than any of AMD’s offerings. Intel Xeon processors also had low failure rates, although this category saw the least sales. Puget notes that there weren’t enough 12th-gen Alder Lake chips to include in the numbers.
Moving on to video cards, the Quadro RTX series has seen the most failures. This was due to a manufacturing issue with the VirtualLink USB-C port on the RTX 4000. “All the ones we received from May 2020 were defective, so a large portion of our inventory of these cards failed our tests. here – and for a long time shortly after this discovery, we stopped offering them, ”writes Puget.
Interestingly, Nvidia’s Founders Edition RTX 3000 series cards were more reliable than those from AIB partners.
In storage drives, Samsung SSDs show extremely low failure rates both in the store and in the field, a trend that Puget says has continued for years. Over 1,000,870 EVO and QVO drives were sold during the reporting period with no reported failures. The company notes that it has sold more than 35,000 Samsung drives in its recorded history, but less than 100 have failed.
To verify The report for full breakdown, including failure rates of power supplies and DDR4 memory.
