Porsche’s new Mission R electric racing car concept is designed to broadcast

Porsche is taking inspiration from the world of esports and live streaming for its next race car concept. The all-electric Porsche Mission R, first shown at this week’s IAA Mobility conference in Munich, is what Porsche sees as “the future of customer motorsport.”

According to Porsche, the Mission R is designed to create “new ways for fans and the driver to interact.” The car has a mostly glass roof – reminiscent of mainstream electric vehicles like Porsche’s Tesla Model 3 or Taycan – so the driver can be seen from above for the entire race. Inside there are mounted cameras for the driver’s helmet, a movable camera on the car’s A-pillar, and a rear-facing dash camera so fans can get up close and personal. . Porsche claims that the gaming platform-inspired steering wheel has built-in biometric sensors to track a driver’s vital signs throughout, and the car also has a dedicated “Livestream button”.

According to Porsche, the Mission R can go from zero to 100 km / h (around 62 mph) in 2.5 seconds, with a top speed of over 300 km / h (around 186 mph) thanks to an electric motor. It also has up to 320 kW of power on the front axle and one with a maximum of 480 kW of power in the rear. That’s the equivalent of the same lap time performance as the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup, according to the automaker. The Mission R’s 80 kWh battery – provided you have the right charger – also looks impressive, charging 900 volts from 5 to 80 percent capacity in 15 minutes.

As a subsidiary of the larger Volkswagen group, Porsche is participating in the company’s push for electrification at all levels. The Mission R is the high-end pro side of the effort that began with the Taycan in 2019. It may never officially hit the racetrack, but it’s an interesting recognition of how bizarre the game is. and racing mix. When races were canceled due to the pandemic, virtual races filled the gap, with the same drivers. Mission R is just a live stream of video games that filters the other way.
