I love my new iPad mini 6. Not just because I got it for free, but because it has satisfied my appetite for a portable large screen device in the short time I’ve owned.
Of course, the 6.7 inch screen on my iPhone 12 Pro Max is very large. Since I own the iPhone 8 Plus, these are the big screens for the best phones or bust. But now that I’ve kept my iPad mini and its 8.3-inch screen practically glued to myself for two weeks, I can’t help but wish it could replace my iPhone.
Now I know the iPad mini’s screen is, well, miniature compared to the regular iPad or iPad Pro. I never tried to lug around these tablets every day. So when used in place of my iPhone on a commute or coffee shop, the iPad mini looks massive. and more capable.
In many ways, I can do the things I normally do on my iPhone with my iPad mini. I can stream shows, listen to podcasts, send iMessages, do my New York Times crossword, FaceTime my friends, and more. This is why I have literally brought it with me every time I have left my accommodation since it arrived.
And since the iPad mini 6 is available in a cellular model, with 5G connectivity, the tablet works without a connection to my iPhone. That means I could go out without an iPhone and use my iPad instead. Yes, I can’t add a phone number to a tablet the same way I could with a cell-enabled Apple Watch, but does it matter?
These days there are many ways to call someone if I want to get in touch with them. The best video chat apps often have voice-only call options. Best of all, with my Apple Watch 6 with Cellular, I can make and answer phone calls using my number through Wi-Fi calling.
What is preventing me from using iPad mini 6 as a phone?
I am not discouraged by the workarounds I should use to call. Also, I usually send SMS to anyone I need to contact. The real reason I can’t replace my iPhone 13 Pro Max (which I’ve been getting for a few weeks due to a drastic delay) with my iPad mini 6 is the quality of the camera.
I take at least 100 photos and videos on my iPhone every week. I’m constantly capturing footage for TikTok (did you follow TechToSee’s Guide TikTok Account?) and features like cinematic mode help elevate my content. If I was only shooting videos on an iPad, it would seem like I was missing out on something.

Additionally, the iPad mini 6 lacks Macro mode, 3x optical zoom, and an ultra-wide lens. The 12MP single camera is still good in a pinch, but it just doesn’t offer as many options as an iPhone’s camera array.
So until Apple makes a bigger iPhone or improves the functionality of the iPad’s camera, you’ll find me lugging around two devices. It’s not ideal, but I’ll manage. A foldable iPhone could make a difference, however.
