The upcoming Motorola Razr could get a substantial power upgrade according to a new report on the supposed follow-up to Motorola’s foldable phone. If the report is correct, we might finally see a phone that can take on Samsung’s excellent Galaxy Z Flip 3.
The Motorola Razr takes the classic Motorola flip phone and gives it a foldable screen, allowing you to open the phone up for a full screen experience. The initial release in late 2019 was powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset, which proved disappointing for such an expensive device. Motorola switched to a Snapdragon 765G for the Razr follow-up, which still hasn’t overtaken the best foldable phones.
But Motorola could speed things up for the next Razr, tentatively called Razr 3 according to XDA Developers. That same report, citing an internal source, claims that the Razr 3 will use a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset and launch with Android 12. It’s Qualcomm’s most powerful silicon currently, so it’s a big step forward by compared to what previous Razrs have used.
Joining the new silicon is 6, 8 or 12 GB of RAM and 128 GB, 256 GB or 512 GB of storage, according to the source of XDA. The current Motorola Razr only offers 8GB of RAM / 256GB of storage, so having more to choose from, including a higher memory version, is also good news.
Ultra broadband support, which is starting to appear in flagship phones like the iPhone 13. It can also be used to unlock cars with ultra broadband support.
Some of XDA’s other disclosures are a bit vague. While there will again be a secondary external display on the upcoming Razr, details – including its size – are unknown. The current Razr 5G uses a 2.7in exterior display, so hopefully the next one is a bit bigger.
On the inner display, the camera would allegedly come out of the current iPhone-style notch. However, XDA is unable to say whether the camera will now be housed in a punch hole or a thinner notch. As for display specs, XDA says the Razr might sport a 120Hz, FHD panel, but it wasn’t able to give us an indication of the size. For comparison, the current Razr 5G’s interior display is 6.2 inches
Another unfortunate set of specs missing from the report are the Razr 3’s cameras. The Razr 5G uses a 48 MP main camera and a 20 MP selfie camera inside, which covers its bases but means it does. doesn’t offer an ultra-wide sensor like the Galaxy Z Flip 3 does.
Taken as a whole, these leaked specs look like the bullet in the arm the Razr needs. Both the original Motorola Razr 2019 and the Razr 5G were disappointing devices, leaving Samsung to conquer the clamshell foldable market segment by pretty much default. It will be interesting to see if the third time around is Motorola’s charm whenever it decides to release a new Razr into the wild.
