Uncharted (February 18, 2022)
A film adaptation of the popular video games Uncharted has been in the works for over a decade, but in 2022 Nathan Drake will finally make his big screen debut.
Tom Holland will put himself in the shoes of the mad treasure hunter. The Spider-Man actor will play a younger version of Drake, as he goes on a globetrotting adventure to find “the greatest treasure ever found.” Mark Wahlberg will be on hand as mentor Victor “Sully” Sullivan. A casting decision that we will rather generously qualify as bizarre. Fans of the Uncharted games have been much less charitable with their reactions.
As a matter of fact, Unexplored is a film we’re more curious about than excited about. Cinematic interpretations of video games have a pretty checkered past, and we’re not convinced Uncharted will break the mold. Nevertheless, we are intrigued to see the end result of this long term project. – Rory mellon
The Batman (March 4, 2022)
We love the tongue-in-cheek style of your average Marvel movie (something that Eternals lacked), but sometimes we want our comic book movies to be a bit darker, and The batman definitely looks dark in all good ways. Taking place outside of the DCEU continuity, Matt Reeves has been given the full license to tell the Dark Knight story he wants.
Robert Pattinson will be donning the cape and hood this time around, and given the actor has already vowed to have no more movies in the studio, we’re pretty intrigued to see what drew him to The Batman. The casting of Paul Dano as Riddler and Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman also got us very excited.
The Batman seems to take inspiration from not only Christopher Nolan’s famous Dark Knight trilogy but Batman: The Animated Series as well, the trailers suggest a similar dark tone and gothic visual design. It sounds like a recipe for success for us. – Rory mellon
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (April 8, 2022)
No, don’t scroll down! Listen to me. If you decided to skip the original live action + CGI Sonic movie, you actually missed it. Of course, it was a wild mix of Jim Carrey going back to his comedic acting roots and James Marsden being the straight dude of Sonic’s maniac child (Ben Schwartz). But this time we have Idris Elba! No, not in the flesh. Elba voices Sonic’s future friend / foe and current foe, Knuckles. And coming out of the trailer on his own, Elba’s vocal work is pretty darn good at making Knuckles intimidating and not cartoonish.
Expect to learn a bit more about the friendship this time around, as Sonic’s pal Miles “Tails” Prower – a two-tailed flying fox – also joins the film. It might be just for the little ones among us, but we really hope we can enjoy Sonic the hedgehog 2 at the cinema with our friends. – Henry T. Casey
Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore (April 15, 2022)
There isn’t really a whole lot of excitement surrounding the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them at the moment. After a first shoddylame entry and a convoluted second installment, it’s no surprise that Dumbledore’s Secrets doesn’t generate any significant buzz.
Still, the prospect of returning to Hogwarts is still appealing. The film’s first trailer is keen to stress the connection to Harry Potter, and it’s easy to see why. Eddie Redmayne’s Newt Scamander is a boring protagonist, but Jude Law’s return as young Dumbledore (in an expanded role) is much more appealing. Plus, Mads Mikkelsen is taking over as Dark Wizard Grindelwald, which we feel is a dream cast.
Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore is probably the last roll of the dice for this exploration of the wizarding world, and for that reason alone, we’re interested to see if WB has finally managed to produce a film that lives up to the adventures of the Boy Who Lived. – Rory mellon
Man from the North (April 22, 2022)
Robert Eggers (The VVitch, The Lighthosue) returns with a cheeky Viking epic. The Northman is, on paper, a brutal revenge film, starring Alexander Skarsgård as Amleth, the heir to a Viking throne whose future is taken from him when his father (played by Ethan Hawke) is killed by his uncle Fjolnir (Claes Bang). This massive-looking film, which seems much more ambitious than Eggers’ previous work, stars Anya Taylor Joy and Nicole Kidman. Skarsgård is almost hypnotic in the trailer, with the way he repeats Amleth’s vengeance and revenge vows. And since he’s from Eggers, we know The Northman will be as good-looking as it is brutal. – Henry T. Casey
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (May 6, 2022)
What’s more dangerous than an MCU with the multiversal flaws we’ve seen in Loki and Spider-Man: No Way Home? Well, one with two Doctor Stranges. In the teaser of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (who surprisingly was just one of the Spider-Man: No Way Home post-credits scenes), we saw that Strange Supreme (last seen in What if … from Marvel?) broke into the reality that our Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) lives in.
Strange Supreme, if you skipped What If…? is the result of what happens when a Doctor Strange shatters reality into pieces while trying to change the timeline so that his beloved Dr Christine Palmer (Rachel McAdams) doesn’t die. Oh, and expect a bunch of big names in the MCU, including Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Loki (Tom Hiddleston). The former is probably trying to find her lost children, while the latter knows something about the multiverse. – Henry T. Casey
Jurassic World: Dominion (June 10, 2022)
If anything was missing from the previous Jurassic World movies, it was time for the characters we hold most dear from this series. Fortunately, Jurassic World: Dominion has a trio of PhDs we’ve been waiting to see again: Dr Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Dr Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) and Dr Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) are all coming back for real – and not just that little cameo that Goldblum had in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The most interesting note about Dominion is that it will break free from the patterns of the previous films and not limit the story to an island or a confined park. The film’s foreground trailer seemed to frame Dominion as the story that all Jurassic movies were built towards, bringing us back to where it all began with dinosaurs and that little fly that sucked in dino DNA and would later be encased in amber. – Henry T. Casey
L’Éclair (June 17, 2022)
I thought I would never end up seeing Toy Story 4. “Who needs another Toy Story?” I wouldn’t whisper to anyone. But I ended up seeing (the awesome enough) Toy Story 4, which is why I can’t really write off Lightyear. Lightning Bolt is the origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the space ranger who has become an iconic Toy Story action figure. Interestingly enough, this movie will treat Buzz Lightyear like a real character, not the fictional TV character he was in Toy Story. This Buzz seeks to explore the depths of space and is voiced by Chris Evans (Tim Allen is absent for no apparent reason other than a desire to have a different voice). Taika Waiti is the only other voice actor announced for the film. – Henry T. Casey
Thor: Love and Thunder (July 8, 2022)
For a while, it looked like Thor (Chris Hemsworth) was never going to see his beloved Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) again. All signs indicated that Portman was permanently away from Marvel Studios. But then, at one of the biggest MCU Comic-Con panels of all time, Portman returned to the stage to be presented with the biggest prize: Mjolnir. Yes, Thor: Love and Thunder is going to build on one of the most interesting Thor’s comedic arcs in recent history: this time, Jane has become Thor.
Complete with powers and everything, the good Doctor Foster will have all of these powers, and we’re curious how his former intern Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings) is going to react. Christian Bale comes to play the avenger Gorr the God Butcher, who is angry with the gods who do not protect his family. Thor and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) will be joined by some of the Guardians of the Galaxy, including Star-Lord. Reported cameos include Russel Crowe as the Greek god Zeus. – Henry T. Casey
Mission: Impossible 7 (September 30, 2022)
It’s time to ignite the fuse once more. After Mission: Impossible – Fallout saw a return to form for the franchise led by Tom Cruise, two more sequels were lit up. Thankfully, Christopher McQuarrie is back in the director’s chair, as he seems like one of the few people who really understands how to save Tom Cruise from his worst ideas (let’s forget some of those mediocre chapters). No story details have been revealed, but we do know that Cruise will be joined by cast members Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and Henry Czerny. Mission: Impossible 7 will also feature plenty of new characters, with some new additions to the cast including Hayley Atwell, Pom Klementieff, Esai Morales, Rob Delaney, and Cary Elwes. – Henry T. Casey
Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever (November 11, 2022)
We knew Wakanda was forever back when Black Panther first came out, but everything else has changed since then. The late Chadwick Boseman’s passing left us without T’Challa, and Marvel Studios refuses to recast the role. So the big question that surrounds Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever is simply “who’s next?” Recent rumors had led many to believe that Letitia Wright’s Shuri was not in the running, as reports surfaced that the actress was at risk of being kicked out of the MCU or recasting due to the desire not to be. get vaccinated against Covid-19. Marvel has since confirmed that Wright will join the cast of Wakanda Forever. – Henry T. Casey
