Microsoft Surface Go 3 Review

Microsoft’s Surface Go devices are a bit difficult to define. Ultimately, these are traditional Windows systems, but in the form of a tablet. I see it more as a lightweight, portable computer when connected to a keyboard and Surface Pen. The Microsoft Surface Go 3 has the same design and form factor as the previous two generations, but has an upgraded processor.

Is the Surface Go 3 an upgrade from previous models? I used the Surface Go 3 for a week, and here is my review.

Microsoft Surface Go 3 price in India: from Rs 57,999 (excluding Type Cover and Surface Pen)

Microsoft Surface Go 3 review: Design and aesthetics

The Surface Go 3 looks like the Surface Go 2. It has the same 10.5-inch display, a magnesium body with a kickstand, stylus compatibility, and keyboard support via magnets. The screen is still surrounded by visible bezels, but I loved the brilliant industrial redesign of the Surface Go 3. The Go 3 measures 9.65 x 6.9 x 0.33 inches and weighs 544 grams, making it a relatively portable and stylish device. Because the device is small and super compact, it’s also handy to keep the Go 3 on my lap, chat with friends, and continue to participate in the conversation. Attaching and removing the keyboard (we’ll get to that later) is smooth and the machine instantly becomes a tablet when the keyboard is removed.

Versatility is the main reason I love this device so much. Since it’s winter, I like to work in my neighborhood park in the afternoon. With the Surface Go 3, I have the confidence to pull the device out, sit in the park for an hour or two, and finish writing an article at my ease. The built-in rear kickstand is always the best – it can be used from different angles and then stowed away when not in use. It also hides a compartment for a microSD card slot. There’s a single USB-C port with a 3.5mm headphone jack and a traditional Surface charging dock on the right. Meanwhile, a volume button and the power button are on the top. The lack of a USB A port is disappointing, which means you can’t plug in a USB stick or use a wired mouse.

Microsoft Surface Go 3 review: screen and speakers

The screen is neither small nor large. It is a 10.5 inch touchscreen with 1920 x 1280p resolution. The Go 3’s refresh rate is capped at 60Hz, rather than 120Hz for the Surface Pro 8, but that doesn’t make much of a difference for average users. In terms of performance, the Go 3’s screen is excellent. I was impressed with how crisp and beautiful the display looked while watching Spider-Man: Far From Home. The screen also looked great in most lighting conditions, including a bright interior light. The screen was even usable outdoors thanks to its brightness.

The Surface Go 3 has two speakers that work very well. Yes, they get very loud and the sound coming out of them is clear, but the speakers don’t have the punch of the four speakers found on the iPad Pro. The device has an excellent pair of microphones, which are suitable for Zoom or Teams calls. The 5MP 1080p front panel is just great, a step up from the lousy 720p offerings found on the majority of laptops. If you spend a lot of time watching video calls like me, you’ll thank Microsoft for adding a high quality webcam to the Surface Go 3. The Windows Hello facial recognition camera above the screen is fast, which allows you to connect instantly when you watch it. You will also find an 8MP rear camera, which I have not tested.

Microsoft Surface Go 3 review: keyboard and stylus

A big part of the Surface Go 3 is how you can use Microsoft’s detachable keyboard and Surface Pen. This strategy differentiates Surface and iPad devices from traditional tablets available on the market which are limited to being content consumption devices. With Surface Keyboard and Pen support, Surface Go 3 becomes a productivity device. As expected, the Type Cover is sold separately. The expensive keyboard (it costs Rs 10,550 on Amazon.in) is an expensive accessory but changes the experience if you want all the features. I know it’s an extra cost but it’s worth every penny. The keyboard offers backlit typing with great travel. It attaches to the bottom of the tablet with strong magnets and doubles as a protective cover for the Go 3. When the Type Cover is paired with the Surface Go 3, it’s not as heavy as carrying a keyboard and trackpad. separated.

The keyboard makes the Go 3 a pleasure to use. On the go, this makes the Surface Go 3 so useful, a full-fledged computer without the added weight of a traditional laptop. There are times when I feel how practical the Type Cover is. The only issue I had was that the Type Cover keyboard is narrower, but I got used to it within a few hours. It works well on a desk, that’s where I spend the most time.

The Surface Pen (the old version, not the new one) also works with the Go 3. It’s a proven stylus that magnetically clips onto the sides of the tablet. It offers excellent pressure and tilt sensitivity, but lacks the ability to wirelessly charge through the Go 3’s body. The Surface Pen will set you back an additional Rs 8,790, which will jack up the battery even more. price per GB 3.

Microsoft Surface Go 3 Review: Performance and Battery

If you look at the Surface Go 3 purely in terms of performance, this device still lacks power. Two models are available: one with the dual-core Intel Pentium 6500Y processor and the other with the dual-core Intel Core i3-10100Y processor. The model I have has the 10th Gen Intel Core M3 chip, 8GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD. The base model has 64GB of eMMC storage which might not seem like enough, but it fits most. people when cloud storage is becoming the norm these days.
To test the Surface Go 3, I used this device for a week and barely touched my work computer, and the results lived up to my expectations. I wasn’t blown away by its performance, and you should keep that in mind as well.

I have found the Surface Go 3 to be a great device for basic computing tasks such as writing and filing stories, using social media, attending electronic meetings, and streaming movies. Netflix after the end of the day. Word, Google Docs, Powerpoint work well on the Go 3. Don’t expect the Surface Go 3 to be a “pro” level machine to use for editing videos or playing games. The whole idea of the Surface Go 3 is to have a computer that works well with the touchscreen and the Surface Pen. I can compose and send an important email quickly, work on presentations in a taxi, and take notes during the event. The Go 3 is synonymous with convenience and comfort. Note: this is a legitimate Windows computer which is also a tablet.

Windows 11, Microsoft’s latest desktop operating system, runs fast and smooth on the Surface Go 3. It’s not a watered-down version of an operating system, which means you can run any program. legacy on this device. The tablet experience is better on the Surface Go 3’s smaller screen with the improvements to Windows 11, although the iPad is still the better tablet. But it’s hard to beat the Surface Go 3 when it comes to multitasking. The new Instant Layout feature, for example, lets you see two or more apps of different sizes side by side on the screen. It works wonderfully on the Surface Go 3. Of course, you won’t get as many apps from the Windows Store as you do from the iPad, but things change slowly and steadily.

The battery life on the Surface Go 3 is poor. The device lasted almost 7 hours before shutting down, which is nowhere near the battery life you get on the iPad. An ARM processor would have been better suited for a device like the Surface Go 3.

Microsoft Surface Go 3 review: should you buy it?

Overall, I think the Surface Go 3 is a good device, but not exceptional. Of course, I understand Microsoft is charging a premium for the Surface Go 3 (the cost goes up dramatically when you include the accessories). The Go 3 is a wonderful little computer that could have been great if it had been powered by a different processor. I can only point out the downsides of the device through my reviews, but this device needs a different processor and I think Microsoft knows that as well. The competition is getting tough for Microsoft, because on the one hand, the iPad becomes more and more powerful to perform real computing tasks and creative tasks, and on the other hand, Chromebooks are great for basic tasks that are enough. for a day’s work.
