A 2022 14-inch MacBook Pro with an Apple M2 chip has been set to replace the current 13-inch Macbook Pro M1 later this year, with the 2022 MacBook Air launching alongside it.
This is according to the technical tipster Dylandkt on Twitter, which also noted that the Apple Silicon transition will be complete by Q4 2022, with the Mac Pro being the last machine to get Apple’s custom chip; this one will apparently be an evolution of the M1 Max chip.
While Apple launched the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros with M1 Pro and M1 Max chips last year, the M1-equipped MacBook Pro 13 is still available as an entry-level business device. But that will be obsolete once the next MacBook Air arrives, as it’s expected to get an M2 chip that will focus on efficiency rather than the raw power of the newer M1 chips.
Much like the relationship between the MacBook Pro M1 and MacBook Air M1, an upgraded Pro model with an M2 chip will effectively provide a machine for people who want a few extra ports, potentially a bigger screen, and a bigger chassis for better cooling. and therefore more performance. At least that’s what we expect; currently, we cannot verify this claimed information.
The currently available MacBook Pro 13 M1 will be replaced by a MacBook Pro 14 with an M2 chip in the 2H of 2022. It will receive a slight price increase over the previous generation. Along with this release delay, we’ll be getting the redesigned MacBook M2 (Air).January 17, 2022
What’s also unclear is whether this entry-level MacBook Pro will get the latest models’ mini LED display. We suspect Apple might stick with the MacBook Pro M1’s LCD screen, as the mini-LED might be too expensive to install in a machine that might target the most affordable part of owning a MacBook Pro. .
Other rumors surrounding the 2022 MacBook Pro are thin on the ground. And there’s always a case where Apple might not release an upgraded entry-level Pro machine at all, especially if its spec sheet follows the 2022 MacBook Air too closely. But then, as we’ve seen with the current iPad and iPhone 13 lineup, there are models of these devices suitable for a variety of price ranges, so it wouldn’t be unprecedented for Apple to do the same for the MacBook family.
If Dylandkt’s information is correct, we won’t know for a while: he suggests that the new MacBooks won’t be released until the second half of the year. However, those of you who are looking forward to new Apple products by then shouldn’t wait too long, as an Apple Spring event is announced for March or April; expect the iPhone SE 3 to be among the products on display there.
