It’s a whole new year, and HBO Max kicked it off with a shiny new red band trailer for Peacemaker.
As we previously reported, the eight-episode spinoff series takes place after the events of Gunn’s 2021 movie The suicide squad– especially after the post-credits scene, in which we learned that Peacemaker had survived what appeared to be a fatal shootout. The first teaser released in October, showing Peacemaker (aka Christopher Smith) recruited by Clemson Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji) for another assignment in order to avoid going back to prison.
Again, he’s basically an assassin, but at least he only kills bad people (maybe). He receives help from Warden John Economos (Steve Agee) of Belle Reve Penitentiary, NSA agent and former Waller Assistant Emilia Harcourt (Jennifer Holland) and new team member Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks). The cast also includes Robert Patrick (Terminator 2) as Peacemaker’s crisp dad, Auggie Smith, who thinks his son is a “nancy-boy”; Freddie Stroma as Adrian Chase (aka Vigilante), a district attorney who fights crime and has quick healing abilities; and Nhut Le as Judomaster.
An extended teaser released in October was heavy on tacky and out of color bro-humor, but it showcased Cena’s knack for physical comedy, and the irreverent and over-the-top tone was perfect, very much in line with the character. .
The full trailer, released last month, fleshed out the basic premise and gave us a slightly less violent and more introspective Peacekeeper after the very bad events of The suicide squad. He had qualms about being ordered to kill women and children, for example, and struggled to cope with long-suppressed daddy issues. (Among the salient lines: Peacekeeper trying to get a heart to heart with his imprisoned father: “Maybe I’m a farmer, not a douche. Someone you don’t like and then you learn to love.” )
And now we have the trailer for the Red Band, which returns to R-rated insanity. The trailer opens with Peacemaker making a special appearance at a local elementary school, bragging about how he defeated the world’s most dangerous villains “with just my two fists, my desert eagle and two spearheads. rockets “. Oh, and also this time he met Wonder Woman. (“She had a whole party staring at me from across the room.”) Hey, he’s trying, okay? It’s hard to find the perfect balance between being the murderous and efficient SOB his current mission needs and being a decent human being able to function in a normal society.
Harcourt is going to be harder to sell than school kids. “Just because you’re beautiful doesn’t mean you’re not shit,” she told him after he told her she could call him Chris. And because deep down he’s incredibly insecure, all he hears is that she thinks he’s handsome. There’s a lot of hijacking of color and secular humor – Eagley gets a little inappropriate with Economos, and Peacemaker looks great with Tortured Vigilante – and of course, there’s a fair amount of blood worthy of a red band. The cast all seem to be having a good time, so this series is definitely on our watchlist for January.
The first three episodes of Peacemaker premieres on HBO Max on January 17, 2022. New episodes will air weekly every Thursday through February 17, 2022.
