From pricing to ProMotion, answer all your questions about the new Apple iPhone 13 series

Apple’s new iPhone 13 line might not be much different from its predecessor, but Apple hasn’t been shy about adding some cool new features, especially in Pro devices. For example, there’s a brand new Cinematic More that uses machine learning to determine the camera’s focus when shooting video, and Macro mode is first coming to Pro devices on an iPhone.

Interestingly, the iPhone 13 series will arrive in India in the first wave itself. This is the first time this has happened. In addition, the prices are the same as last time despite the large storage.

We’ve put together a list of questions people ask and tried to answer them.

Does the ProMotion come with user controls?

No. Apple keeps the feature fully automatic so users don’t have to worry about managing refresh rates on the new Super Retina XDR displays in the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone Pro Max.

Powered by the new A15 Bionic processor, the system will determine which screen is the best to display a certain type of content. This means that the phone will not have more refresh rate than a certain situation needs, thus saving battery life to some extent.

However, developers will have the option to stipulate at what refresh rate they want certain content to be displayed.

How does cinematic mode work?

Apple’s new cinematic mode for video is available across the entire iPhone series. It uses machine learning algorithms based on the way movies have been shot over the years to automate the shift in focus when shooting video. For example, if the subject in focus looks away, the camera will automatically shift focus to the other subject on the screen, making it feel like a smooth manual focus shift.

While on iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini this will be automatic, on iPhone Pro devices users will be able to decide which topic to focus on. They will also be able to maintain their focus and release it as they wish.

Incredibly, with these video files, users will be able to shift focus even while editing.

What is ProRes video?

ProRes, a suite of video compression codecs used primarily during editing, has been around since 2007. With Apple bringing its own version of ProRes in the new iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max, users will be able to achieve the industry standard for the highest quality videos on their phone. It also means that they will be able to have a full professional workflow on the iPhone itself.

Apple has added up to 1TB of storage in its new models to cater for the extremely large file sizes resulting from the ProRes format so that its Pro users can capture that high quality video without any transcoding of these raw video files.

What energy efficiency with the ProMotion display offer?

Apple has not quantified this. But given that the phone will now be at a 10Hz refresh rate much longer than before, Pro models will benefit from significant power efficiency. However, the screen is also more superior now and offers higher brightness, which could negate some of the gains, despite the new controlled screen on the A15 Bionic.

Has the iPhone 12 Pro series been discontinued?

Yes, the iPhone 12 Pro series has been discontinued because Apple is focusing on the iPhone 13 Pro series. You may still be able to buy the old model as long as stocks last.

Is iPhone 13 cheaper than iPhone 12 in India?

The iPhone 13 series is priced the same as the iPhone 12 series, but it’s worth noting that the base storage is now 128GB. That means you get more for the price than the iPhone 12. The iPhone 13 Mini has a starting price of Rs 69,900 and the iPhone 13 Rs 79,900, exactly the same as last year.

As with the rest of the Wave 1 countries, reservation by reservation for the new iPhones will begin in India on September 17, with sales kicking off exactly one week later on September 24. It is the first time that India has been among the countries of the first wave. , showing how the subcontinent is now at the top of Apple’s priority list for adding new users.

We will be answering more questions soon.
