Facebook, Snapchat facing outage problems

Facebook and Instagram appear to be facing another blackout. According to downdetector, user reports also point to a problem on Facebook and Instagam. Rival, Snapchat also appears to be down. We tried to post a story on Facebook and Snapchat and couldn’t do it. However, we were able to post on Instagram so it might be a limited outage for the app and not impact all users.

According to downdetector, over 50% of users report a problem with the Instagram app, while 25% are facing issues with the website.

Facebook hasn’t had a good October so far. It faced one of its longest blackouts on Monday, October 4 which lasted nearly six hours. The outage impacted all of Facebook’s major apps, including Instagram, Facebook Messenger, and WhatsApp. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg later apologized for the problem and said it was due to a configuration change. Facebook then faced another outage on Friday when Instagram and the Facebook app were not working for some users.

During the last outage, attempts to open Facebook’s website showed a DNS error. Facebook then wrote a blog post explaining that its engineering teams discovered that configuration changes on the main routers that coordinate network traffic between the company’s data centers were causing issues and disrupting service. The Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) issue is the root of Facebook’s latest outage.

“This disruption in network traffic has had a cascading effect on the way our data centers communicate, shutting down our services,” he added. Simply put, Facebook machines have stopped communicating with each other due to what is known as a DNS (Domain Name System) error.

But it looks like Facebook isn’t the only one facing all of the problems. Rival Snapchat is also down with downdetector also showing that user reports indicate an issue with the app as well. As we pointed out, we were also unable to post a story on Snapchat.
