Rocksteady made a name for itself as one of the first teams to create a universally acclaimed superhero game with Batman: Arkham Asylum. He followed that success with two sequels, the best-loved Batman: arkham city, and the division, though still fantastic, Batman: Arkham Knight. As time goes on with the caped crusader behind, fans have been waiting to hear what this studio will tackle next. Most assumed it would be another DC property, since it’s owned by WB Games, and those suspicions turned out to be correct, although with one property, few would have predicted that.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was officially announced as Rocksteady’s new project at the DC FanDome event in 2020. At the time, outside of graphic novels, of course, we only had one flop of a movie based on this anti-hero group, so many were hesitant to see them tackle this property. Now that we have some gameplay trailers and footage, it’s become clear that Rocksteady hasn’t lost its touch. We undertook this suicide mission for you and came away with all the details you need to know about Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

Release date

It’s taken a long time since the game’s reveal to get a release window, but Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League should now be released in 2022. While this information is better than nothing, it is still a very large window which may imply that a delay could push it into the next year of 2023. We wouldn’t expect that based on how far along the game is, but you never really know how the projects are going behind the scenes. We must also consider that the other WB DC Game Gotham Knights has also been delayed to 2022. Chances are WB wants to space out these two titles as much as possible, so Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League probably won’t arrive until fall 2022.
Platforms

While we may still be waiting when we can play Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, we know at least How? ‘Or’ What we can play it. This title is confirmed for all current-gen systems, namely Xbox Series X and S, PS5, and PC.
Trailer
The new trailer for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League came to The Game Awards 2021. This trailer was just under three minutes long, but it was our first real look at the game in action. We open with Captain Boomerang recording video of himself taunting the team’s current target, The Flash, before he’s interrupted by the man himself. Other heroes mentioned include Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern.
After a cut, we learn from Deadshot that The Flash, for unknown reasons, is working for or under the control of the villainous Brainiac. After the orders to kill him are repeated, the team swings into action in a montage showing how each member will move around the city and battle the mutated tech monsters. Eventually, they encounter Flash again and engage in a fight. We take a close look at his face, which shows glowing red eyes and dark veins running through his cheeks, strongly implying some form of mind control.
The trailer continues with a ton of additional gameplay footage, which we’ll cover in the next section, before one last encounter with The Flash. This time he circles around the team, literally, creating a huge tornado. It ends with Captain Boomerang about to throw a boomerang at Flash which somehow charges some sort of ball of energy into his hands. After a cut, it looks like the Suicide Squad have won until a giant burst of light interrupts their celebration.
Stepping back for those who might be confused, what is the Suicide Squad? Well, in this particular game, it’s a cast of DC villains like Harley Quinn, Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, and King Shark, who are hired by a woman named Amanda Waller. Their mission? Well, kill the Justice League, obviously. So far, we know this version of the Justice League will at least consist of Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and The Flash, if the names Captain Boomerang threw in are any indication. Other possible members, based on other iterations of the superhero team, could include Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, Green Arrow, Hawkman, Cyborg, and more. Naturally, we don’t expect them all to appear, but there may be a few surprises.
We can also reasonably expect Batman to be in this game as well since Rocksteady has confirmed that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will be set in the same universe as their Arkham series. Without spoiling Arkham Knight, however, everything will depend on when this game takes place in this series.
The big bad, however, definitely seems to be Brainiac. Not only does he seem to have somehow taken over the members of the Justice League, but the entire city the game is set in as well, with creatures and giant mechanical structures everywhere.
Gameplay

Not to be confused with Gotham Knights, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is an open-world game where you can play alone or with three friends in co-op. If playing alone, you’ll choose one of the squads to control directly with the ability to jump between them at will, and anyone not controlled will have an AI take over. It will take place in the open world of Metropolis, which you can explore in different ways.
With four main characters, each has their own way of playing. Basically, it looks like the basics of gameplay will be an expanded version of what we got with the Arkham series. We see tons of flashy attacks, grappling hooks, and special moves unique to each character, along with a more robust system of ranged options and different traversal modes.
King Shark, for example, can do giant leaps, sprint up walls much like The Hulk or Spider-Man, and has melee strikes, grapples, a pair of hook weapons, more a mini-pistol for ranged attacks. Deadshot, on the other hand, moves around via his jetpack, fires automatic and explosive weapons, and can get in slightly close with his glove guns. We don’t know if the rhythm-based combat that made the Arkham games so satisfying will return, or if it’ll be more of a traditional third-person action game.
The structure of the game, apart from being an open world, also remains a question mark. We’re hoping this would allow players to choose which Justice League member we wanted to pursue, while likely keeping Superman locked until the end, and possibly even accidentally encountering a member when we weren’t expecting it. . Reclaiming the city from Brainiac’s control is another scheme we strongly suspect. Freeing areas of the strange foraging creatures we see and weakening its grip on the city can play a part in freeing the League from its control.
Nothing was shown or mentioned about RPG systems either, but it sounds like something Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will somehow integrate. Similar to how you could upgrade Batman with new gadgets and moves, we would like a way to level up our team members as the game progresses.
Multiplayer

Yes, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is designed to be a single player and cooperative experience. It’s a first for Rocksteady but it makes sense given the nature of team play. You can play with up to three of your friends together, each taking a different member into battle. What we don’t know is how they will handle the progression. This has been tricky for the devs lately, so we just hope this isn’t another situation where only the host player progresses or continues, but we’ll have to wait for details on this one.
Downloadable content

No DLC plans have been made, but Rocksteady games, in particular Arkham Knight, were packed with DLC content. They tend to combine adding story-based additions, even focusing on all-new characters like Catwoman, as well as more gameplay-focused characters like Challenge Missions. These two feel right at home in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Personally, aside from the basic challenge-type elements, adding another member of the Justice League to hunt down would be a great way to add to this game after launch, if not another member of the Suicide Squad itself.
Pre-order

We still don’t know how far Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is as of release, so no pre-order option is available yet. There’s no doubt in our mind that this game will come in a variety of editions when it finally receives a release date, in which case we’ll be reviewing all of those versions so you can choose the best one for you.
