Nintendo has warned users not to peel off the protective film layer from the new Switch OLED console. This anti-scatter adhesive film is a protective measure the company advised you to leave as is (giving this advice on both page two of the Nintendo Switch OLED Health and Safety Information document and in a statement to IGN).
The anti-scatter adhesive film helps prevent glass shards from scattering all over the place if the screen shatters when the OLED Switch falls. It wasn’t included in the original Nintendo Switch or the Switch Lite, as those devices used plastic screens – which can shatter but shouldn’t shatter like glass.
However, many of us are now wondering if that means we still need a regular screen protector for the Nintendo Switch OLED or are we safe with the one that Nintendo has already kindly attached? Well, wonder no more – because we have your answer.
Do i need a screen protector for my OLED Switch?
As for Nintendo, yes, you should get a screen protector for the Nintendo Switch OLED – it even sells one alongside one. official carrying case on his site. However, what additional protection could it actually offer beyond the layer of protection already installed?
Well, a little more. This is because although the anti-diffusion adhesive film is “protective, it is intended to protect you from damage rather than the switch itself.” It may have slight scratch and shatter resistance qualities, but its intended use is to prevent shards of glass from scattering when the screen shatters rather than preventing the screen from shattering in the first place.
In that sense, it won’t be as capable of protecting the OLED Switch as a dedicated screen protector made of tempered glass or other material.
So if you are looking to keep your new OLED Switch free of scratches and reduce the risk of the screen shattering when you drop it, we recommend getting an extra screen protector to place on top of the film. adhesive already applied.
Some people are not a fan of how screen protectors look, but in our eyes the screen protector looks much better than a huge crack.
However, PLEASE don’t install it as an alternative to the movie that Nintendo has already placed on the OLED Switch itself. Put the new one on top to make your Switch as secure as possible.
