Batman: Gotham Knights Trailer, Launch, Gameplay & More

Batman: Gotham Knights is a cooperative crime-fighting game without the help of the Dark Knight himself. Brought to you by WB Montreal, this superhero action game puts a unique twist on the beloved Batman: Arkham franchise with a focus on Batman sidekicks like Batgirl and Robin.

With an original story that forces our heroes to survive in a world without Batman (and some very exciting villains), Gotham Knights could be DC’s next big action title. Here’s everything we know so far, including the game’s trailer, release date, and gameplay details.

And if you’re looking for more Gotham Knights, you won’t have to wait long. DC Fandome 2021 is going to give us another look at the game.

Created at the DC FanDome, the first Gotham Knights trailer introduces our heroes while setting up the game’s story. In this original tale, Batman was apparently killed, forcing his closest partners – Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin and Red Hood – to team up to save Gotham.

As many suspected, the main villains seem to be the Court of Owls: a dangerous criminal family from recent Batman comics with deep ties to the Wayne family. Batman’s eternal villain, Mr. Freeze, also makes an appearance.

Based on a lengthy gameplay trailer released by WB Montreal, Gotham Knights appears to offer the tight melee combat and open world exploration of Arkham games with a new cooperative twist with some RPG elements. The four playable characters: Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin can all be upgraded with new gear and abilities as you level up, and up to two players can team up online in co-op.

Similar to their appearances in previous Batman games, each character will have their own unique strengths and abilities. Batgirl excels at close quarters combat and martial arts, while Nightwing uses his iconic Escrima staves for long-range and close-range personnel attacks. Robin fights with a staff and possesses stealth abilities, while the volatile Red Hood is an expert on guns. It also looks like you’ll be able to sync up with your partner and combine your abilities for some exciting team attacks.

Each hero has their own crossing abilities and will even be able to drive vehicles such as the iconic Batcycle to navigate Gotham’s five fully explorable neighborhoods.

The gameplay trailer reveals a few light RPG mechanics, as the characters can be seen racking up experience points when they take out enemies. Similar to titles like Destiny and the Division, enemies will also have their own levels, which will allow you to identify which villains are worth fighting for and which ones you should return to when you get stronger. According to WB Games Montreal, boss encounters will become more and more varied and challenging as you reach higher levels.
