Not only is Aquaman 2 gearing up to start filming Jason Momoa’s Shimmering Armor, but we finally have a title (details below). While plot details are rarer than full liquor bottles around Arthur Curry, we’ve rounded up quite a bit of detail on the upcoming DCEU movie.
Of course, the film picks up where the first Aquaman film left off, when Curry finally embraced his role as King of Atlantis. Aquaman already has a target on his back, posed there by David Kane (aka Black Manta), who was rescued at the end of the first movie. Kane heads to Atlantis and brings marine scientist Steven Shin (played by Randall Park) with him.
We expect to see behind-the-scenes footage of Aquaman 2 at DC Fandome 2021.
The Cast of Aquaman 2
The main and confirmed cast for Aquaman 2 still looks a bit short, but most of the key players are back. It starts with Momoa as Arthur Curry / Aquaman and Amber Heard as Mera.
Patrick Wilson is reprising his role as King Orm, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is back in Black Manta gear, but we’ll explain more about them in the Villains section below.
More recently, Pilou Asbaek, a former student of Momoa in Game of Thrones (who was Euron Greyjoy in the HBO series) was reportedly added to Aquaman 2. His role has yet to be announced.
The current cast is as follows:
- Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry / Aquaman
- Amber Heard as Mera
- Patrick Wilson as King Orm / Ocean Master
- Temuera Morrison as TechToSee Curry
- Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as David Kane / Black Manta
- Pilou Asbaek in a role to be confirmed
Possible, but still unconfirmed returns include Nicole Kidman as Atlanna and Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko.
Title Aquaman 2
Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom is the full title of Aquaman 2, as director James Wan announced on Instagram. The Lost Kingdom is one of the Seven Kingdoms of Atlantis, and it may be Arthur Curry / Aquaman’s job to find this land and restore it to a functioning part of the Empire.
Aquaman 2: Amber Heard photo
Following rumors debunked that Amber Heard was fired from Aquaman 2, the co-star teased her return to the role of Queen Mera with a Photo that she took a moment to read part of Scottish writer Iain M. Banks’ science fiction book, Surface Detail.
His caption, “Before Aquaman Took the Last Pages of This Book” refers to how his co-star Jason Momoa would have loves to tear up the last pages of a book before one of her co-stars can finish it.
Aquaman 2 release date
While we have been in a veritable sea of delays, Aquaman 2 is currently slated for release on December 16, 2022. This date seems quite distant and robust.
This would match the details we received from Dolph Lundgren (King Nereus), who told a Wizard World panel that production is set to begin in the summer of 2021.
We haven’t seen any delays in Aquaman 2 due to its early initial release date. This was done due to DC’s busy release schedule, which it will shed light on on DC Fandome 2021.
Aquaman 2 villains
We know two names that should make life difficult for Arthur Curry and the rest of the heroes of Aquaman 2, and they are both familiar faces. Patrick Wilson is back as Orm the Ocean Master and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will also return as Black Manta.
Orm won’t be the big bad, as Wilson described at an event at an independent bookstore (via Reverse) that “He won’t be the main villain in another movie.” This leaves Black Manta as the likely big bad – which makes sense given Aquaman’s post-credits scene which revealed that Black Manta is not only alive, but very angry with Aquaman.
