I’m not very good at predicting the future. I’m more of the type that’s right in front of my face. So whenever I see iPhone 14 rumors about upcoming phones and tablets I take them into account, and if they seem reasonable I guess that’s as good a guess as any. which other. But when Jon Prosser released a series of renders for the iPhone 14 a full week before the iPhone 13 was revealed, there were parts of it that gave me pause.
In fact, to say that they gave me a break is misleading. I bluntly said I didn’t believe them.
I’m just going to go ahead and say it now. I’m not buying today’s iPhone 14 leak. On a scale of 1 to 10, this is my confidence level.

Not a classic Apple movement
Apple typically doesn’t follow the crowd by iterating over a concept before it finally lands on a final design. On the contrary, Apple waits for something to be perfect before implementing it. We’ve seen under-screen cameras before, which is the next step after punch-hole cameras, and my gut tells me that Apple will wait for this technology to evolve to a point where it’s good. Spoiler alert: The cameras below the screen are not yet good, as my colleague Ajay Kumar has seen on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3.
Apple’s design language seems to embrace the notch more, having introduced two new MacBooks with a notch. To me that gives the impression that it will be there at least for the foreseeable future. The notch can become a part of its branding since most Android phones have ditched the notch in favor of punching. I’m not sure it makes sense for Apple to follow suit.
But lately we have seen no less than Three other experts predict that FaceID will come in the form of a puncture. There are reports that the puncher could be pill-shaped, which if you ask me looks less like a puncher and more like a notch with a hat on. Either way, when four different sources say Apple is going to do something, it may be wise to listen.
Against a current
But that said, it doesn’t sound very Apple. Making the pill-shaped hole punch might be Apple’s iteration on established design practices, but I’m not sure it’s better than that. The problem with Apple is that it’s historically slow to adopt features that are used elsewhere, but usually when it does, it improves those features. There are certainly exceptions to this rule; anyone who has ever tried copy and paste on an iPhone knows this.
So where are we now? Personally, while the whole world is predicting otherwise, I have to think Apple will stick to its guns this fall and keep the guts up for another generation or two. The puncher is no better than the notch, and the pill-shaped hole even less so. It just doesn’t seem like the right level of refinement Apple has been expecting. I could be wrong, and it is becoming clearer and clearer that I am probably wrong. Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see this fall to find out that Apple has the iPhone 14 up its sleeve.
