Alienware Concept Nyx Just Redefined Home Gaming – Here’s How

I think we’re all fed up with waiting for PS5, Xbox Series X, and RTX 3080 restocking. Why can’t we have just one piece of hardware in our house that plays AAA games on any screen we have. want to ?

That’s the idea behind Alienware’s Concept Nyx, and I was fortunate enough to see it in action before CES 2022.

Think of Concept Nyx as a cloud gaming service like Xbox Game Pass, Google Stadia, or Nvidia GeForce Now. Except instead of streaming the web using remote servers, all processing would happen locally through a central server in your home and a high-speed LAN. You also wouldn’t need one of the best gaming laptops or the best gaming PCs to play with because the game would be streaming to your screen. Even a thin Dell XPS 13 would do.

Alienware uses this scenario to describe the potential of Concept Nyx. You could play CyberPunk 2077 in your bedroom on a desktop or laptop, then switch the game over to your 65in TV in the living room when you get down and pick up where you left off. Meanwhile, other players in your home or playing Rocket League on their own laptop or tablet, and yet another person playing Minecraft on their phone.

The Concept Nyx device looks like a black monolith that sits somewhere in your house and connects to your Wi-Fi network, presumably Wi-Fi 6E for the best results. And there’s an intuitive game launch interface so you can jump right into the action. This simple app would be loaded on every device, providing instant access to all of your games.

The coolest part of the Concept Nyx demo was seeing two different games playing on the same TV at the same time which is serious multitasking but is a realistic scenario when you think about the size of the best TVs. It’s like DirecTV’s Game Mix feature for the NFL but for video games. In fact, Concept Nyx ultimately seeks to power four game streams simultaneously.

During our demo, I noticed a bit of glitch during a sequence, but since it’s a concept that’s understandable. It would be just great to look around the room and see the gameplay move from screen to screen with minimal fuss.

Alienware couldn’t reveal the specs fueling Concept Nyx or anything regarding the possible timeline, but it’s clear it could appeal to die-hard gamers and casual gamers alike.
