Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 are set to be one of the big audio launches in 2022. As a next-gen model, the AirPods Pro 2 have a lot going for them and expectations are understandably high ahead of their likely launch later this year.
Of course, we still love the current AirPods Pro, which have earned a spot on our list of the best noise-canceling headphones, thanks to their effective ANC capabilities, impressive sound quality, and high comfort levels.
Recent price drop deals are making headphones even more appealing today – so if you’re looking for a great set of headphones, now’s a great time to pick up the discounted AirPods Pro.
Based on previous Apple launch event times, the AirPods Pro 2 introduction should coincide with the expected September release of the iPhone 14. And for those happy to wait, they seem like a new addition. exciting addition to Apple’s already strong lineup. headphones, and one of the wearables industry’s biggest releases for 2022.
With that in mind, here’s what we’re hoping the new AirPods Pro 2 headphones will deliver.
1. Lossless audio support and EQ customization
For some, any potential AirPods Pro 2 design idea would be the main look. But that’s not how I ride.
As an audio quality enthusiast, the most exciting feature I would love to see on the AirPods Pro 2 spec sheet is support for Apple’s ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) format. This will make it compatible with the company’s Apple Music streaming service, which gained lossless and high-resolution support in 2021.
Lossless music tracks use much larger data streams and file sizes, and this is potentially one of the reasons why we might see iPhone 14 arriving with more internal storage later in the year.
It would certainly do the Rumored 2TB iPhone 14 model a little easier to justify. And other lossless format support is unlikely to be included, all helping to push audiophiles towards Apple Music.
We’re also anticipating the support for spatial audio that was introduced with iOS 14, as well as the ability to adjust the audio output via more sophisticated EQ customization.
2. Improved Active Noise Cancellation
Any ANC improvements on the new model would be welcome. Our AirPods Pro review pointed out that the headphones have good levels of active noise cancellation (ANC), but they can’t quite compete with the likes of the Bose QuietComfort Headphones, Jabra Elite Active 75t or Sony WF-1000XM4.
The best ANC headphones also feature a transparency mode or adjustable noise filtering that intelligently detects when to turn off noise cancellation and allows the wearer to hear conversations straight through. It might even alert them to nearby dangers, for example.
An advanced version of this kind of ANC technology has been hinted at in a new App patent, and the AirPods Pro 2 could potentially be the first to harness a new H1 chip with more sophisticated smart processing.
3. Fitness and Health Tracking
Apple’s impressive health and fitness tracking features found in iOS and the Apple Watch 7 could be the next suite of features to pack into the AirPods Pro 2.
We imagine the built-in fitness tracking being aided by infrared sensors, accelerometers, or gyroscopes. This would certainly bring a compelling feature set to the next-gen model and further justify the ‘Pro’ moniker.
An upgrade in this area would be especially helpful for users who wear headphones at the gym or while running. It could also offer an easy way to stay in control of your health and fitness data without needing to put an Apple Watch on your wrist.
Improvements to the water resistance rating would be another useful upgrade to make the AirPods Pro 2 comparable to better-protected rivals such as the OnePlus Buds Pro (rated at IP55) and Bowers & WilkinsPI5 (rated at IP54).
4. Improved battery life
There aren’t many rechargeable devices that don’t claim to improve battery life with each new model iteration. Apple has a knack for developing ever more sophisticated and energy-efficient chipsets with each new generation. And a rumor that the H1 chip should bring more efficient power management and better battery life.
Current AirPods Pro manage around 4.5 hours of playtime, but the recently introduced AirPods 3 can get 6 hours of playback from a single charge, but without ANC. Still, we hope Apple will aim to provide at least similar playtime for the AirPods Pro 2.
5. Design and accessories
There’s nothing wrong with the design of the current AirPods Pro, with its short stems and neat bud shape. But that doesn’t mean the AirPods Pro 2 will arrive without some styling tweaks and upgrades, if only to make the earphones different from their predecessors.
We would like to see the rumors of a more rounded bullet-shaped design come to fruition, as removing the stems would make the design less conspicuous and less divisive. Even if the rods are not shortened, there is still room to refine the AirPods Pro 2 design with the storage/charging case.
One last thing: while we had no issues getting an effective acoustic seal in the ear canal for optimized sound performance, there are only three sizes of ear tips that come with the current model. This may limit their fit and performance for some wearers. Some extra end caps seem like a minor addition and might help broaden the appeal.
The possibility of two different sizes, as the end of 2020 said, would be even more important, helping users find the perfect AirPod Pro 2 for them.
