5 unanswered Deltarune questions we have after chapter 2

As Subtitle superfans probably already know this, Deltarune Chapter 2 is now available on PC, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation. People have had time to read Toby Fox’s latest work at least once, or maybe even browse a few leads.

However, the taste only leaves us wanting more. This is mainly because this is the second chapter of an unfinished game – not a standalone work. It’s meant to intrigue players to keep going, with unanswered questions left at the end of each chapter. Damn, Chapter 2 does not even explain the end of Chapter 1.

Here are some of the hit indie game’s unanswered questions and our best guess at the answers.

When is chapter 3 of Deltarune released?

Seam moves to the castle town of Deltarune Part 2.

Now that Deltarune Chapter 2 came out, the natural follow-up question is: when is the next chapter coming?

Well, Chapter 2 wasn’t supposed to come out as soon as he did. Fox was planning to release Chapter 1 then followed by the game over. In his September 2021 update, he explained that he released Chapter 2 now because “the world has been really difficult for everyone lately.” His plan, however, remains virtually the same.

Fox plans to release Chapters 3, 4, and 5, with the already existing chapters, in the form of a package. However, this more complete version of Deltarune doesn’t have a release date, so chapter 3. It probably won’t be finished anytime soon, given the team has just finished Chapter 2.

City-castle in Deltarune Chapter 2.

Fox announced that he had completed “readable outlines for every chapter of the game” and “first pass dialogue for almost all cutscenes” in his September 2020 update. At that time, he was working with three other active members of the team to finish Deltarune: Chapter 2, which was released in September 2021 – a year later – with this team of people behind it.

Chapter 2 apparently had the most cutscenes of any planned chapters and other difficult factors that added to the development time, so ISubsequent installments may take less time. Fox started receiving requests for additional help in September 2020, which could speed things up as well. He admits that even he doesn’t know when the next version will be ready.

Deltarune chapter 3, 4, and 5 will probably take at least two more years to be completed based on the work Fox and his team have done so far.

How many routes are there in Deltarune?

Noelle says the wrong way in Deltarune Chapter 2.

Deltarune Chapter 2 marked the first discovery of an alternative route. This road has forged many names, including the Strange Road, the Snow Tombs Road, and the Genocide Road (or the Deltarune version of it) to indicate its fork from what is considered the game’s default path.

However, this is not necessarily the only alternative route. It’s possible that interacting differently with other characters on the line could lead to other branching points that weren’t available in previous chapters.

Subtitle had three paths: the default route, the pacifist route and the genocide route. Deltarune has two for now: the default and the alternative. There are even variations of the default route, like a certain character losing an arm. Naturally, this changes some dialogues in the story even though the result is relatively unchanged.

Fox has not confirmed exactly how many routes he has planned Deltarune. For now, the answer is at least two.

How many characters can join your team?

Noelle joins the party in Deltarune Chapter 2.

Deltarune Chapter 2 introduces Noelle, Kris’ childhood friend, as a member of the group. Before, only Susie and Ralsei participated in the fights. Only three characters can fight at a time, but it is possible to have them all in the group. It’s just that Susie and Ralsei will take priority over Noelle.

Noelle first appears as an NPC classmate but later becomes a playable character. It’s only Chapter 2, so that other characters can play a role in the future. However, it is probably not much more than what is already available. Alternatively, these are just the characters we already know.

This is not an AAA studio. We probably don’t have an entire army like in a Fire Emblem game.

Is there romance in Deltarune?

Kris kisses Ralsei in Deltarune Chapter 2.

Deltarune has tons of “ships”, and I’m not talking about boats. For example, Noelle seems unusually interested in Susie. Susie seems to want to spend a lot of time with Ralsei. Even Kris has the opportunity to say and do worthwhile things. It reminds me of a weird feeling of teenage romance.

Deltarune doesn’t seem to rule out all possible character pairing altogether. So, will there be any canon pairings? Will these relationships just be hanging in the air for players to interpret as they please? Some players have already reported different reactions from the characters depending on Kris’ choices.

Subtitle didn’t really have any gun ships, but that doesn’t mean Deltarune habit. For the moment, nothing is set in stone.

Who is the knight?

Kris seals the dark fountain in Deltarune Chapter 2.

The knight is the main antagonist of Deltarune – the one responsible for opening the dark fountains that could potentially plunge the world of light into eternal darkness and turn all darkness into stone. It is mentioned in the Legend of Delta Rune, which Ralsei recites at the beginning of Chapter 1. However, we do not know who the Knight is, although we know their role in the story.

Dark fountains create dark worlds. To seal the dark fountains means to close the particular dark worlds they have created. Whereas a new world of darkness opened up in the computer lab after the events of Chapter 1, it seems that the knight is not only a historical figure. They’re real and are hitting the city’s computer labs.

Some fans have speculated that Kris was in fact the knight, even before Chapter 2. However, Kris is also the one with the power to seal Dark Fountains. We’ll probably have to wait the rest of Deltarune to find out the truth.

People have their opinion, I have mine. No one other than Fox and the team knows the truth. If you are curious about the Subtitle Turn-based RPG from the developer, you can play the first two chapters for free on PC, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4.
